It is common to equate severity of angina with risk of fatal cardiac events. There is only a weak relationship between severity of pain and degree of oxygen deprivation in the heart muscle (i.e. there can be severe pain with little or no risk of a heart attack, and a heart attack can occur without pain).
The annual mortality in patients with stable angina with documented coronary artery disease ranges from 1-4%. However, the prognosis varies widely depending on various factors like duration and severity of symptoms, resting ECG abnormalities, abnormal left ventricular function and associated comorbidities[1]
