Pertussis should be differentiated from other infectious and non infectious causes of prolonged cough.

Differential Diagnosis

• Pertussis' symptoms are similar to, and can be misdiagnosed as, the following diseases:
  • Asthma
  • Atypical pneumonia
  • Bronchiolitis
  • Chlamydial infections
  • Common cold
  • Foreign body aspiration
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease
  • Sinusitis
  • Tuberculosis
• Pertussis is differentiated from the common cold by the persistence and worsening of respiratory symptoms 1-2 weeks
