Risk factors in the development of pertussis include the following:

  • No or incomplete vaccination
  • Exposure to infected individual (usually within 5 feet)
  • Infants and children < 5 years of age
  • Significant pulmonary co-morbidities (e.g. asthma)
  • Immunocompromised status
