Overview

Angiogenesis inhibitors and different chemotherapy agents are under investigation nowadays which might prove fruitful for treatment of desmoid tumors in future. Furthermore, mutational analysis for beta-catenin gene may soon be used to predict the recurrence risk and to aid in designing the individual therapies.

Future or Investigational therapies

  • Following investigational therapies might prove fruitful in future for treatment of desmoid tumors:

Angiogenesis inhibitors

  • Newer substances which block the formation of new blood vessels feeding the tumors are under investigation and may be able to prevent the tumor growth in future

Chemotherapy agents

  • Several chemotherapy drugs, or combination of drugs are being tested by researchers, that could prove to be most effective in treating desmoid tumors to avoid radical management via surgery

Mutations in the gene for beta-catenin

  • Beta-catenin gene mutations have been found to commonly occur in desmoid tumor
  • Mutational analysis may be used soon in order to predict the recurrence risk and to aid in designing the individual therapies
