Overview
Sleep apnea may present as a result of conditions which cause narrowing or complete closure of the respiratory airways (e.g. enlarged adenoids, enlarged tonsils), conditions which affect the central nervous system thus preventing the brain from sending the right signal to the muscles that control respiration (e.g. cerebrovascular accident, spinal cord injury), as Postoperative complication of surgeries, or due to some infections such as polio.
Causes
Life Threatening Causes
Those conditions that can cause death or permanent disability within the next 24 hours if left untreated.
- Cerebrovascular accident
- Obesity hypoventilation syndrome
- Opioid overdose
- Post-polio syndrome
- Postoperative complication
- Spinal cord injury
Common Causes
- Common cold
- Diabetic neuropathy
- Enlarged adenoids
- Enlarged tonsils
- Hypothyroidism
- Obesity
- Opioid overdose
- Postoperative complication
- Sinusitis
- Tonsilitis
