Overview

Metoprolol is a competitive, β₁-selective (cardioselective) blocker used in treatment of angina pectoris, hypertension, arrhythmia, and migraine. Common adverse reactions include bradyarrhythmia, heart block, heart failure, hypotension, pruritus, rash, constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, headache, depression, dyspnea, and wheezing.

The active substance metoprolol is employed either as metoprolol succinate or as metoprolol tartrate. The tartrate is an immediate-release and the succinate is an extended-release formulation.
