Risk factors for the development of ventricular fibrillation especially in the setting of acute myocardial infarction include:[1][2][3]

  • Family history of sudden death
  • Cumulative ST elevation
  • Left coronary artery lesions leading to myocardial infarction
  • Absence of preinfarction angina

In one nationwide study, ventricular fibrillation in the setting of acute myocardial infarction was associated with following risk factors:[4]

  • Age < 60 years old
  • Absence of preinfarction angina
  • Family history of sudden death
  • Use of statins
  • History of atrial fibrillation
  • Alcohol intake >7 units per week
