Discovery

  • Atherosclerosis was recognized during the 19th century.
  • In 1910 Windaus reported that atherosclerotic plaque contained cholestrol.

  • In 1959 Triparanol was the first cholestrol-lowering agent that introduced in US.But in 1960 because of serious side effects it was whithdrawn from the market.
  • A canadian pathologist Rudolf Altschul was discovered nicotinic acid in 1955 ,and in 1958 England synthesized Clofibrate.
  • Akiro Endo (japanes}in 1970 discovered Hmg-coAreductase inhibitors.[1]
