Overview
Acute respiratory distress syndrome is extremely serious and manifests within 24-48 hours of initial injury.
History and Symptoms
ARDS usually occurs within 24 to 48 hours of the initial injury or illness. Often, people with ARDS are so sick they are unable to complain of symptoms. The patient usually presents with:
- Shortness of breath
- Tachypnea
- Symptoms related to the underlying cause
- i.e. shock.
- Labored, rapid breathing
- Low blood pressure and organ failure
