Echocardiography/Ultrasound
Abdominal ultrasound is an essential investigation in all patients with polycythemia unless the cause is apparent. Findings on an abdominal ultrasound are suggestive of polycythemia include:[1]
- Splenomegaly (minor criterion, while palpable splenomegaly is a major criterion for the diagnosis of primary polycythemia)
- Simple renal cyst (renal arteriogram should be performed if there's any suggestion of pathology on abdominal ultrasound)
