Common risk factors in the development of umbilical hernia includes infants, pregnancy, African American, mucopolysaccharide storage diseases, Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, and down syndrome.

Infants
African Americans
Patients with the following pre-existing diseases:
Pregnant woman
- There are times that the uterus may block the bowels from coming through the opening, but these cases are rather rare.
- Six weeks after the baby is born, most surgeons will repair the hernia.
