Stage	Description
Stage I	Complete surgical resection
Stage II
Stage IIa	Complete macroscopic surgical resection Intrahepatic residual microscopic disease
Stage IIb	Complete macroscopic surgical resection Extrahepatic residual microscopic disease
Stage III
Stage IIIa	Incomplete surgical resection with macroscopic residual Significant tumour spill Positive lymph node disease
Stage IIIb	Tumor not resected
Stage IV
Stage IVa	Distant metastatic disease Primary tumor completely resected
Stage IVb	Distant metastatic disease Primary tumor incompletely resected
