Overview

History and Symptoms

The hallmark of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis is nephrotic-range proteinuria.[1]  

History

Patients with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis may have a positive history of:[2][3][4]

  • Positive family history of FSGN
  • Heroin abuse
  • Chronic viral infections such as hepatitis B
  • Medications such as bisphosphonates, sunitinib, and interferon

Common Symptoms

Common symptoms of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis include:[5][6]

  • Proteinuria
  • Hematuria
  • Anasarca 
  • Headache and blurry vision which is suggestive of high blood pressure

Less Common Symptoms

Less common symptoms of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis include

  • Fatigue
  • Malaise
  • Symptoms of chronic renal failure such as anuria, edema
