Dr. MGR-Janaki College of Arts and Science for Women was established as per the wishes of Janaki Ramachandran, former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, who wished that a college for women as a tribute to her late husband Bharat Ratna Dr. M.G. Ramachandran be established in the Sathyabama MGR Maligai Campus. Her cherished vision took shape as eminent people like Shri. N.P.V.Ramasamy Udayar(Late)Founder-Chancellor,Sri Ramachandra University, Shri.N.C.Ragavachari(Late)Senior Advocate,High Court of Madras, Dr.Jeppiaar Chancellor, Sathyabama University and many well wishers from the field of education lent their shoulder for this noble cause.

Affiliation and accreditation

All courses offered by the college are affiliated to the University of Madras. This college is approved vide G.O.Ms 431 dated 12th June 1996, Education, Science and Technology Department, Government of Tamil Nadu. The college is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council , an autonomous body under the University Grants Commission, New Delhi.[1]

Motto

"Excellence through Diligence" - The motto of the college reflects the principle that both Dr. M.G. Ramachandran and Mrs. Janaki Ramachandran believed in. We create an atmosphere in which students can work diligently - in such an atmosphere "Excellence" is not an effort - it just blossoms.

The mission of this college is:

To meet the educational needs of women, to make them sensitive to the various issues that confront them in society and equip them to handle them with maturity.

The college believes that economic independence is essential to empower women. The college believes that applied knowledge and acquiring skills is essential, hence it offers job oriented courses that are in demand in the job market.

The college believes that education is much more than providing a degree. It provides the students with ample opportunity to actualize themselves and to develop their talents.

Reflecting Dr.MGR's concern for the hearing impaired and physically handicapped, this college aims at integrating as many such students as possible into the college.

Dr.MGR Janaki College embraces its responsibility to address issues of gender in all of their complexity and urgency, and to help students achieve the personal strength that will enable them to meet the challenges they will encounter throughout their lives.

The Dr.MGR-Janaki College thrives on high expectations. By setting rigorous academic standards and giving students the support they need to meet those standards, this college enables them to discover their own capabilities. Learning in this unique environment, the students of Dr.MGR-Janaki College become agile, resilient, responsible, and creative, prepared to lead and serve their society. Education at Dr.MGR-Janaki College claims to prepare students not by training them for particular careers but by teaching them how to learn. Their object, is not to teach that which is peculiar to any one of the professions, but to lay the foundation which is common to them all. Without this, the whole apparatus of libraries, and instruments, and specimens, and lectures, and teachers, would be insufficient to secure excellence.

Location

The college is located in the center of Chennai on a 5 acre campus. It is one of the few colleges in Chennai located within the city hub.

Training to youth

The College authorities have introduced National Service Scheme, Youth Red Cross and Rotaract, SIFE Wings for the students. Youth are trained in conducting night schools, laying the roads, educating slum dwellers, service to differently abled, tree plantation, health programmes etc.

Courses are taught in English. Languages offered are Hindi, Tamil, Sanskrit and French.

Admissions are offered based purely on the norms laid by the Government of Tamil Nadu and the University of Madras.
