Overview

Recently, the functional neuroimaging modalities of SPECT and PET have shown quite similar ability to diagnose dementia as clinical exam [1]. SPECT's ability to differentiate vascular type from Alzheimer disease types of dementias appears to be superior to clinical exam.[2]

SPECT and PET

PET, positron emission tomography and SPECT, single-photon emission computed tomography narrow down the differential diagnosis of dementias but in most cases show almost same findings as that of CT and MRI.
