The Berkendael Institute (French: l'Institut chirurgical de Berkendael), nowadays a surgical institute of the Red Cross, was founded in 1903 by Dr. Antoine Depage (1862-1925) and his wife Marie Depage-Picard (1872-1915). In 1907, Edith Cavell was appointed matron of the institute. When World War I broke out, the institute was taken over by the Red Cross.
