Overview

Fistulography is used to diagnose anal fistula in the past but is replaced by MRI nowadays. This is used to find out the anatomy of fistulas.

X Ray

  • Fistulography is used to diagnose anal fistula in the past.
  • Fistulography is painful and invasive procedure so it is replaced by MRI nowadays.
  • This is used to find out the anatomy of fistulas.

Procedure:

  • A fine cannula is catheterized through the external opening, a water-soluble contrast agent is injected to find out the fistulous track and after that X-ray is taken.

Drawbacks of fistulography:[1][2]

  • It is very difficult to assess fistula with multiple tracks due to the filling defect with contrast material.
  • Fistulography is not used to visualize the anal sphincter.
