Overview

Diabetic foot is a long term complication of diabetes mellitus, with a multi factor ethiology that causes lost of sensation and impairment of circulation and, if untreated, finally leads to foot ulceration, gangrene and amputation. Diabetic Foot Infection (DFI) is definded by the presence of two or more clasic sings of inflamation or purulence. Infections can be classified in mild (skin and subcutaneous tissue or ≤2 cm of extension), moderate (deeper than subuctaneous tissue or >2 cm of extension) or severe (presesence of SIRS). Regardless of the severity, every patient with clinical DFI should undergo debridment of the necrotic tissue.
