A native of Stamford, CT, Dr. Tortland received his undergraduate and masters degrees from the University of Connecticut. Prior to embarking on his medical career, he maintained a private practice in marriage and family therapy while teaching at UConn.


Dr. Tortland received his D.O. from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. After completing his internship he did his residency in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine and general practice at the University of New England. He then went on to fulfill a sports medicine fellowship at SportsCare/The Toledo Hospital in Toledo, Ohio.


Dr. Tortland is a Fellow of the American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine. He is also a member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Association of Orthopedic Medicine, the American Academy of Osteopathy, and the American Osteopathic Association. He is a member of the Connecticut State Medical Society’s Committee on the Medical Aspects of Sports, and he is currently the President of the Connecticut Osteopathic Medical Society. Dr. Tortland is on staff at St. Francis and Hartford Hospitals, and he is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He is a team physician for the University of Hartford, United States Figure Skating Association, World Wrestling Entertainment and Bloomfield High School and has served as a volunteer physician for the U.S. Olympic Committee.


Dr. Tortland lectures and teaches extensively on topics ranging from sports medicine to chronic neck and back pain.
