Medibank Private is an Australian government-owned private health insurer, established under the Fraser government in 1976 through the Health Insurance Commission (now known as Medicare Australia). It is Australia's largest health insurance provider with 3 million members, and the only health insurer present in every Australian state and territory. Its Chief Executive Officer since 2004 has been George Savvides.

It currently operates as a government business enterprise and is run as a not for profit organisation. In April 2006, the Howard Government announced its intention to privatise Medibank Private[1]. The sale of Medibank has been delayed until 2008[2] pending the outcome of the 2007 Federal Election. The Government claims this is because a Medibank sale occurring at the same time as the current Telstra sale risks flooding the market, however the opposition claims that it would have little impact and the sale has been delayed because it is too unpopular to hold during an election year.

Sponsorship

Medibank is the main sponsor of the Melbourne Storm in the NRL, and the West Coast Eagles in the AFL. It has the naming rights to Medibank Private Stadium (formerly Leederville Oval), home of WAFL teams East Perth and Subiaco. It is also the sponsor the Medibank International tennis event.
