Chemosis is swelling (or oedema) of the conjunctiva. It is usually caused by allergies or viral infection. It can also be caused by eye rubbing. Antihistamines are used for treatment.
Chemosis (with facial oedema) may also occur as a result of Superior Vena Cava obstruction.
Exophthalmos, a sign of hyperthyroidism, can be associated with chemosis, lid retraction, lid lag, periorbital puffiness and proptosis.de:Chemosis
