Avani Sharma is a student of GEMS American Academy and is currently residing in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Prior to moving to the UAE, she lived in Canada for 8 years. She is intrigued by the exploration of the field of sciences. She plans to pursue a career in the medical field especially as applied to the neurological domain of medical knowledge.

She is always prepared to go the extra mile for precision and accuracy in her work and is determine to grow and succeed in the career of her choice. Leadership/Activities

Brain Builders Program | March 2018- April 2018

Engaged and served patients with traumatic brain injury to provide an environment for effective recuperation. Avani worked towards the program's mission "to build upon the compassionate framework to share interactions of humanity that foster comfort, connection, and recovery for patients with TBI.” Avani engaged in personalized activities with the patients and formed a relationship that consists of trust. 

GEMS- GMU Research Program | 2017- present

Avani is working with the faculty of Gulf Medical University in UAE to write a final research paper. This program covers extensive research problem-solving, assignments and projects with on campus lessons and mentorship throughout the program. 

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center | December 2017- April 2018

Assisted and was directly involved in the labor and delivery department and performed their duties. Avani worked directly with physicians and patients in departments of her interest for 75hr. She understood the patient to physician relationship that is established in the multiple professions of the medical field by shadowing the doctors in the department.

Wikidoc.org | 2017- present

Avani is an online remote contributor from Abu Dhabi. Editing content and updating the medications pages on the site. The position requires excellent English grammar and writing skills, attention to detail, and proficiency using different computer software. She works directly with the team in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi | August 2017

Interacted with patients, asked physicians about the profession, and developed a sense of compassion, as well as service. Avani was exposed to different departments and their functions: Pain/Neuro Clinic, HVI Clinic, Respiratory Clinic, Acute Case, Occupation Health, Laboratory and Infection Control, Acute Care, and Pharmacy.

Google Code-in | December 2017- January 2018

Participated and worked with multiple open source software organization with tasks ranging from coding, documentation, outreach/ research, and user interface design. Received a digital certificate and prize. 

We Charity, Free the Children | 2011- present

Leading several campaigns as the Youth Leader to combat issues such as the lack of education, health, water, opportunity, and food. Participated in the first WE Conference in Canada, and was selected as a delegate to the WE Day Concert for two years.

TEDxYouth@GAA | present

Organized the Second TEDx Youth Event under the theme, “Start with a Yes” for GEMS American Academy, scheduled to occur in April, 2017. Avani is leading a team of over 35 members for the event in the capacity of Organizer/ Curator and licensee by TED.

Participant as a delegate to the conference for the last three years, representing the school.

TEDxYouth@GAA | June 2017

Organized the First TEDx Youth Event under the theme, “Creative Frontiers” for GEMS American Academy. Avani led a team of 30 volunteers for the event in the capacity of Organizer/ Curator and licensee by TED.

Head of junior varsity and varsity team since 2014. Recipient of Honor Medal- School Top Scholars in Regionals for the past three years. Shortlisted as top five scholars selected to participate in Global Round.

Beacon of Hope | June 2017

Assembled portable solar lights to provide children in impoverished and worn-torn communities to encourage education, positivity, and hope.

Operation Smile | April 2017

Participated and contributed to the charity drive for donations towards helping children born cleft lips receive a new smile.

Participated in several charity drives and awareness campaigns for the betterment of the school and general community. 

Genes in Space | 2017

Participated in the first GIS Competition in UAE. Proposed a Polymerase Chain Reaction Experiment to conduct in space that tackles the challenge of the human organ systems in space.

Co-directed a crowd-sourced film directed by Richie Mehta and produced by Ridley Scott, Anurag Kashyap, and so on.
