Overview

Tonsillitis is characterized by signs of red, swollen tonsils which may have a purulent exudative coating of white patches (i.e. pus). In addition, there may be enlarged and tender neck cervical lymph nodes.

Vital Signs

Skin

  • Red rash that feels rough, and increased redness in the skin folds[1]

Throat

  • Excess drooling in a young child
  • Severe difficulty swallowing or breathing
  • Pus in the back of the throat
  • Tenderness of the jaw[1]
