Overview
Tonsillitis is characterized by signs of red, swollen tonsils which may have a purulent exudative coating of white patches (i.e. pus). In addition, there may be enlarged and tender neck cervical lymph nodes.
Physical Examination
Vital Signs
Skin
- Red rash that feels rough, and increased redness in the skin folds[2]
Throat
- Excess drooling in a young child
- Severe difficulty swallowing or breathing
- Pus in the back of the throat
- Tenderness of the jaw[3]
Neck
- Tender or swollen lymph glands in the neck
- Enlarged lymph nodes[4]
