The different genotypes of salmonella have been associated with different manifestations of the disease, yet, the process is not fully understood. Future studies are required to explain the potential genetic basis of the development of invasive non-typhoidal salmonella, and why certain non-typhoidal salmonella strains cause more severe disease than others.[1]

Research for the development of humanized mouse models is also required. These models will allow to understand more of the pathogenesis of salmonella in human tissues, as well as to test the efficacy of new treatments and vaccines.[1]
