Overview

Patients with Mycoplasma pneumonia generally appear well. Common physical examination findings include fever, decreased oxygen saturation on room air, tachycardia, tachypnea, pharyngitis, and decreased breath sounds with crackles and increased tactile fremitus on lung auscultation. Other physical examination findings include rash, pallor, sinus tenderness, cervical lymphadenopathy, and possibly bullous myringitis.

Physical Examination

General Appearance

Patients with Mycoplasma pneumonia generally appear well.

Vital Signs

• Decreased oxygen saturation on room air
• Fever
• Tachycardia
• Tachypnea

Skin

• Rash may be present. The characteristics of the rash are non-specific.
• Pallor may be present in cases of hemolytic anemia

HEENT

• Pharyngitis with no exudates
• Sinus tenderness may be present
• Myringitis (bullous) may be present on otoscopy

Neck

• Lymphadenopathy may be present

Lungs

Palpation

• Increased tactile fremitus
• Dullness on percussion
• Decreased breath sounds
• Bronchial breath sounds
• Wheezing may be present but is uncommon
• Rhonchi
• Crackles, Rales
• Increased vocal fremitus
