Overview

The prevalence of hamartomas at autopsy has been reported at nearly 0.25%. Pulmonary hamartomas are estimated to be 8% of all lung neoplasms, other hamartomas occur with less frequency.[1][2][3]

Prevalence

  • The prevalence of hamartoma is approximately at 0.25% in general population.[3]
  • Pulmonary hamartomas are estimated to be 8% of all lung neoplasms. Most lesions are diagnosed incidentally.[1][2]

Age

  • Hamartomas are usually first diagnosed among patients in the 4th and 7th decades of life. Hamartomas are very uncommon in children.[3]

Gender

  • Males are more commonly affected with pulmonary hamartomas than females. The male to female ratio is approximately ~2-3:1 ratio.[3]
  • Males are more commonly affected with hypothalamic hamartomas than females. The male to female ratio is approximately 1.3:1 ratio.

Race

  • Hypothalamic hamartoma usually affects individuals of all ethnic groups equally.
