Differential Diagnosis of Eczematous Dermatitis

Endogenous etiologies

  • Atopic dermatitis
  • Asteatotic eczema
  • Hyperkeratotic dermatitis of the hand
  • Pompholyx (dyshidrotic eczema)
  • Nummular eczema
  • Lichen simplex chronicus (neurodermatitis)
  • Stasis dermatitis
  • Seborrheic dermatitis
  • Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma

Exogenous etiologies

  • Irritant dermatitis (due to water, detergents, chemicals [i.e., solvents, alkalis], friction, heat, low humidity)
  • Allergic contact dermatitis
  • Photoallergic contact dermatitis
  • Post-traumatic eczema
  • Dermatophytid reaction
  • Tinea
  • Candidal dermatitis
