Overview

A renal biopsy is not necessary for the diagnosis of diabetic nephropathy, and its usefulness in the diagnosis is still debatable.

Other Diagnostic Studies

Renal biopsy

  • A renal biopsy is not necessary for the diagnosis of diabetic nephropathy, and its usefulness in the diagnosis is still debatable.
  • Renal biopsy is particularly useful to exclude other renal pathologies. In diabetic nephropathy, the classic finding is that of diabetic glomerulosclerosis.[1] However, there may be superimposed non-diabetic kidney disease, as well as acute tubular necrosis.[2]
