History and Symptoms

History

Patients with dextrocardia may have a positive history of:[1][2][3]

  • Situs inversus
  • Kartagener syndrome
  • Recurrent respiratory infections
  • Reduced exercise tolerance
  • Hydrocephalus

Symptoms

Patients with isolated dextrocardia with no associated abnormalities are usually asymptomatic. When dextrocardia occurs with abnormalities such as kartagener syndrome and situs inversus, patients may present with the following symptoms:[1][2][3]

  • Cyanosis
  • Dyspnea
  • Fatigue
  • Failure to thrive
  • Exercise intolerance
  • Recurrent sinus/pulmonary infections
  • Arrhythmias
  • Abdominal pain due to intestinal obstruction
