Overview

History

  • The majority of patients with ovarian dermoid cysts are asymptomatic. They are discovered incidentally on testing for other reasons.

Symptoms

Ovarian Dermoid Cyst

  • Large dermoid cysts that may predispose to ovarian torsion may present with acute pelvic pain.[1]

Periorbital Dermoid Cyst

Spinal Dermoid Cyst

  • Spinal dermoid cysts most commonly involve the lumbosacral region than the thoracic vertebrae and are extramedullary in location.[2]
  • Symptoms of spinal dermoid cyst may include:[3][4]
    • Pain
    • Motor disturbances
    • Sensory disturbances
    • Bowel and/or bladder dysfunction
      • Fecal retention or incontinence
      • Urinary retention or incontinence

Intracranial Dermoid Cyst

  • Headache is the most prominent symptom of intracranial dermoid cyst.[5]
  • Less common symptoms of intracranial dermoid cysts include:
    • Focal neurological deficits
      • Motor disturbances
      • Sensory deficits
    • Seizures
