Overview

Laboratory Findings

  • The following lab studies are conducted in patients suspected with wilms tumor:
    • Complete blood count (CBC)
    • Coagulation studies
      • Von Willebrand assay
        • Done in children with history of hypervascular disease or bleeding.
        • Acquired Von Willebrand's disease can be present in patients suffering from wilms tumor.[1]
        • This is done as a precaution to risk of bleeding that can occur in case of interventions done for wilms tumor.
    • Urinalysis
    • Liver function test
      • Abnormal in case of liver metastasis of wilms tumor.
    • Serum creatinine
      • Done before and after surgical intervention.
    • Serum calcium[2]
      • May be elevated in children suffering from rhabdoid tumor of kidney.
      • May be elevated in children suffering from congenital mesoblastic nephroma.
    • Cytogenetics studies
