ANEMIA

Definition: Anemia occurs when the level of RBC in a human's body is decreased.

Classification of anemia

Anemia can be broadly classified into 3 major classes.

  • Microcytic anemia
  • Macrocytic anemia
  • Normocytic anemia

Microcytic anemia

For anemia to be classified as Microcytic, the Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV) has be less than 80fL. Normal MCV is usually between the rage of 80-100fL. The MCV is the average size of a regular RBC.

  1. Iron deficiency anemia
  2. Thallassemia
  3. Sideroblastic anemia
  4. Anemia of chronic disease

Iron deficiency anemia

Iron deficiency anemia occurs when the iron levels in the body are low. This is most commonly associated with bleeding.[1] [2]
