Natural History, Complications, and Prognosis
Natural History
If left untreated, almost all the patients with blind loop syndrome may lead to poor nutrition. Blind loop syndrome can cause loss of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin B12.
Complications
- Complete intestinal obstruction
- Intestinal infarction (death of intestine)
- Perforation (hole) of intestine
- malabsorption and malnutrition
Prognosis
Majority of the patients get better with antibiotics and nutritional supplements.
If surgery is required, and patient undergoes surgery for the condition, then the prognosis is very good.
