This 1952 image depicted the left foot of a patient, which displayed this acute tropical ulcer upon his admission to Goroka Hospital, in Goroka, New Guinea. At the time of this photograph, the cause of this infection was unknown, however, the cause of such ulcerative wounds is usually found to be fusiform bacilli and spirochetes
