This photograph depicts the colonial morphology displayed by Gram-negative Shigella boydii bacteria, which was grown on a medium of sheep’s blood agar (SBA), for a 24 hour time period, at a temperature of 37°C. See PHIL 12464, for a closer view of these bacterial colonies. Shigella spp. bacteria are pathogenic towards humans, and cause an illness known as shigellosis.
