Under a magnification of 500X, this Gömöri-stained photomicrograph of human heart tissue, reveals the presence of Candida albicans fungal organisms, which had invaded this patient’s tissue. C. albicans can infect the heart muscle, i.e. myocarditis, the interior lining, or endocardium, i.e., endocarditis, and the sac that surrounds the heart, or pericardium, i.e., pericarditis.
