Epidemiology and Demographics
Incidence
- Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma is the 2nd most common type of skin cancer in the United States, behind basal cell carcinoma (BCC), and accounts for approximately 20 percent of nonmelanoma skin cancers.
- Because they are not typically reported to cancer registries, the exact incidence of this malignancy is unknown.
Region
- Squamous cell carcinoma is a common disease that tends to affect people living closer to the equator.
- In Australia, for example, there are approximately 1035 and 472 cases per 100,000 for men and women, respectively.
- In contrast, the age-adjusted incidences for men and women in Finland are only about 6 and 4 per 100,000.
