Overview

Pirbuterol (trade name: Maxair) is a beta-2 adrenergic bronchodilator used in the treatment of asthma, available (as perbuterol acetate) as a breath-activated metered-dose inhaler ("autohaler").

Clinical use

• Asthma - preventative/maintenance medicine
• Asthma - "rescue" medicine for reversal of acute asthma attack

Mode of Action

• MAOIs, tricyclic antidepressants may increase the effects of pirbuterol.

Adverse Effects

Cardiovascular

• Palpitations
• tachycardia
• blood pressure changes
• chest tightness / chest discomfort
• angina pectoris
• arrhythmias

CNS

• Tremor

• anxiety
• confusion
• fatigue
• dizziness
• nervousness
• headache
• weakness
• hyperactivity / hyperkinesia / excitement
• insomnia

Ear Nose and Throat

• Dry nose
• throat irritation

Gastrointestinal System

• GI distress
• dry mouth
• diarrhea
• nausea / vomiting

Respiratory

• Cough
