Overview

Pre-exposure Prophylaxis

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends either either ACAM2000 or JYNNEOS as pre-exposure prophylaxis to individuals whose work may expose them monkeypox. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends vaccination with ACAM2000 in non-emergency settings to laboratorians performing diagnostic testing for monkeypox and military personnel. Vaccination is also recommended to persons investigating monkeypox outbreaks and involved in caring for infected individuals, and research laboratory personnel who directly handle cultures, contaminated animals or infected humans.

CDC does not recommend pre-exposure vaccination for unexposed veterinarians, veterinary staff, or animal control officers, unless such persons are involved in field investigations.

  • ACAM2000 is an FDA approved active immunization against smallpox disease for persons determined to be at high risk for smallpox infection.
  • JYNNEOSTM, also known as Imvamune or Imvanex, is an FDA approved vaccine to prevent monkeypox and smallpox in adults 18 years of age and older determined to be at high risk for smallpox or monkeypox infection.
