Overview

Epidemiology and Demographics

  • Patients with type 1 diabetes may suffer an average of two episodes of symptomatic hypoglycemia per week thousands of such episodes over a lifetime of diabetes, and one episode of severe, at least temporarily disabling hypoglycemia per year.
  • Severe hypoglycemia events have been reported to range from 62 to 320 episodes per 100 patient years in type 1 diabetes.[1]
  • Hypoglycemia is less frequent in type 2 diabetes than it is in type1.[2]
  • Event rate for severe in insulin-treated type 2 diabetes is approximately 30 percent of that in type 1.[3]
  • Event rates for hypoglycemia requiring professional emergency medical treatment range from 40 to 100 percent of those in type 1 diabetes.[4]
  • Frequency of hypoglycemia in patients with type 2 diabetes approaches that in type 1 diabetes as patients with type 2 diabetes approach the insulin deficient end of the spectrum of the disease and require aggressive treatment with insulin.[5]
  • Hypoglycemia is uncommon in individuals who do not have drug-treated diabetes mellitus.[6]
