Primary Prevention

Over the long term, there are several important steps to help patients stop overbreathing:

  • If anxiety or panic are triggers, seeing a psychologist or psychiatrist may help.
  • Breathing exercises
  • Practice of relaxation techniques regularly, such as progressive muscle relaxation or meditation
  • Regular exercise

If these methods alone are not enough in preventing overbreathing, a beta blocker medication may be recommended.
