Immunohistochemistry
- Epithelial markers play an important role in the diagnosis of merkel cell cancer which include:[1]
- Cytokeratin AE1/AE3
- CAM 5.2
- Pan-cytokeratin
- Epithelial membrane antigen, and
- Ber-EP4
- Merkel cell carcinoma may also shows positive for neuroendocrine markers such as:[2]
- Chromogranin
- Synaptophysin
- Calcitonin and
- Vasoactive intestinal peptide
- Somatostatin receptors (SSTRs)
Cytogenetic and molecular analysis
- Many chromosomal abnormalities have been detected in merkel cell cancer but most commonly affected are:[3][4]
- Chromosome 1: Especially involving p and q arms
- Chromosome 5
- Chromosome 6
- Chromosome 8, and
- Chromosome 13
