  • Pneumomediastinum may be classified according to cause into 2 groups:
  1. Spontaneous also known as idiopathic pneumomediastinum: Predisposing factors are tobacco use, recreational drug use, asthma, interstitial lung disease, COPD.
  2. Secondary pneumothorax:
    1. Iatrogenic: Endoscopic procedures, intubation/extubation, central line placement.
    2. Traumatic: Blunt force trauma, penetrating injury.
