In gender studies and feminist psychoanalysis, yonic is the female term corresponding to phallic, meaning any object that symbolically resembles a vagina.

Etymology

While "phallus" comes from Ancient Greek via Latin, yonic comes from the Sanskrit yoni. The Sanskrit term for phallus being lingam, and the Latin term corresponding to yonic being vaginal.

Use of term

As with Electra complex, the term does not originate with Freud, who did not wish to emphasize analogies between the sexes. It rather originated with feminist authors.[citation needed] It is also used in New Age writings to refer to symbols of femininity.
