WikiDoc Scholar Activities

The following are activites performed by WikiDoc Scholars:

Building WikiPatient

WikiPatient is the sister site to WikiDoc, designed especially to provide information for patients. While currently much of the content links directly to the main WikiDoc articles (which are written generally for an audience of healthcare professionals or those with a scientific background), we are looking to begin building patient-focused pages. This activity consists of creating WikiPatient chapters in order to provide information specifically for patients.

1. Go to the WikiPatient main page and select a "disease/disease state" (for example, Cancer)
2. Click on the link from the "disease/disease state" page to get to the WikiDoc page
3. Click on the "edit" tab of the WikiDoc page and at the top of the page copy and paste the following text: '''For patient information click [[{{PAGENAME}} (patient information)|here]]'''. Save the page.
4. Click on this new link that you created (by clicking on the word "here"). This will take you to the new patient information page.
5. At the top of the new patient information page, copy and paste the following text (with the name of your disease or disease state in the place of "yourtopic"): '''For the WikiDoc page for this topic, click [[yourtopic|here]]''' For example, on the Asthma (patient information) page, you would type: '''For the WikiDoc page for this topic, click [[Asthma|here]]'''
6. Begin to add content copied from open source, copyleft sources to your patient information page. Use the list of topics from the Patient Information Page Layout to categorize the material. Try HealthFinder.gov or MedlinePlus.gov for copyleft information.
7. At the bottom of the new page, copy and paste the following text: [[Category:Patient Information]] {{WH}} {{WS}}
8. After you are done adding information, save the page. Then go back to the "disease/disease state" page. Click the "edit" tab on the top of this page. Find your topic (which should be listed in brackets in the order it appears on the "disease/disease state" page). After the open brackets ( [[ ) type the name of your new patient information page followed by a pipe ( | ) before the already existing text of your disease topic: [[yourtopic (patient information)|yourtopic]]. For example, instead of [[Asthma]], it should read [[Asthma (patient information)|Asthma]] Save this page.
9. Repeat Step 1 with a new disease or disease state.

Improving the readability of WikiDoc, adding templates and repairing links to improve WikiDocs functionality

This is the single most important function of our WikiDoc Scholars. These activities dramatically improve the functionality and readability of the textbook. These activities include:

• Adding templates to pages such as adding the search infobox that appears on the right side of pages or adding the template asking people to join as Editor-in-Chief of pages, or ensuring that the help menu and statement regarding attribution of content is at the bottom of each page
• Adding editors to pages and adding contact information for editors
• Improving the layout and readability of pages and assuring that disease pages follow the WikiDoc template
• Fixing broken links and removing links to subjects that are not related to medicine
• Ensuring that pages are classified and placed in the appropriate category

Building the Clinical Trials wiki

This activity consists of adding information about a variety of clinical trials to the website. Our goal is to add as many landmark trials from the past as possible. Dr. Gibson has developed a template that you can use to add information about a clinical trial (see Template to add a clinical trial ) and instructions on how to add a trial (see Help:How to add a trial to the clinical trials wiki). Want to get started?

1. Go to this page Acronyms of Clinical Trial Names and click on any trial in red that interests you.
2. In a new window or tab, go to this page Template to add a clinical trial, click on the edit tab and copy the content in the text box.
3. Paste this text into the blank trial page you previously opened.
4. Start filling in information about the trial under the appropriate sections.
5. Don't forget to click on the save page button below the text box to save your work.

Serve as a resource to teach people how to edit pages

Our new Editors-in-Chiefs often need training in how to use the wiki software to make their edit pages. This activity consists of conducting phone calls with new editors and groups of individuals and walking them through how to edit and format pages. Our WikiDoc scholars instruct editors in the following:

• How to start a new page
• How to add pictures and videos
• How to bold, underline and italicize text
• How to indent and add numbered bullets to create lists
• How to add links to other chapters in the wiki and link to content outside of the wiki
• How to add an email address
• How to redirect multiple pages with similar names to the same page
• How to change the color and size of a font
• How to create columns
• How to make tables
• How to make a template
• How to add references
• How to add content to a category

Differential diagnosis project

This project is designed to create a database of diseases, conditions or drugs associated with a sign or a symptom. WikiDoc has searched itself to come up with the names of chapters where any sign or symptom appears. The job of WikiDoc scholars is to review these lists associated with a sign or symptom to assure that diseases, conditions or drugs on the list are truly associated with the sign or symptom. The scholar also adds to the list diseases identified from other sites and databases to compile the most complete differential diagnosis on any topic. Ultimately this database will be used in knowledge engines to arrive at the diagnosis in complex patient cases. This project is perfect for medical students and residents. It is a stretch goal for the pre-medical student, but is in the reach of highly motivated and bright applicants.

Creating help menus and creating content in languages other than english

WikiDoc is in need of individuals to translate our help menus and medical content into other languages.

Outreach to heighten awareness of WikiDoc

We need the help of WikiDoc scholars to identify organizations of pre-medical students, medical students, residents, fellows, nurses, hospitals and other allied health professionals who could benefit from the site. The WikiDoc scholar would help design and distribute educational information about the site to expand awareness of the site.

Creation of news stories for WikiDoc

We need WikiDoc scholars to prepare healthcare related news stories throughout the year. These news stories can be related to either clinical or basic science research, public health, health care information technology, clinical effectiveness or any other healthcare topic of interest. This activity may be appealing to those scholars entering a career in journalism or public policy.

Adding copyleft pictures of disease states

This activity consists of adding copyleft images to clinical disease pages. Please make sure that there is nothing that would identify the patient in an image (a face or an ID number).

Adding copyleft images of molecular structures

Our basic science, molecular biology and biochemistry content could benefit from expanded images of molecular structures that can be found at wikipedia and other copyleft sources.

Adding questions to the WikiDoc Board Review Course

Our WikiDoc board review course is in beta testing. This activity consists of adding in non- copyrighted board review questions that are tagged to specifc pages in WikiDoc.

Integrating news stories into WikiDoc's textbook content

One of the central goals of WikiDoc is to update the textbook continuously based upon advances in basic and clinical research. This activity consists of integrating content that appears in the news sections into the textbook content of the site.
