The Faculty of Dentistry at Minia University (MUDH) was established in 1997. It was the first college with dentistry specialization outside Greater Cairo. Since that time it has been considered the source of knowledge to a lot of dental specialists in a wide geographical area covering the whole of Upper Egypt. Moreover, the services offered by Minia University Dental Hospital reach an enormous number of patients who were either abandoned or, if they can afford, obliged to travel to Cairo for quality treatment which was naturally a troublesome experience.
Aims
The purpose of the project is to provide the hospital educational, medical, management, financial, and administrative staff with an IT system that will enhance their knowledge and the management in higher level of quality control over the whole operation.
Beside the direct impact on the educational system represented in a diversity of technological approaches like equipped IT labs, there is also a tangible indirect impact in freeing the academic staff's precious time from the daily routine management work to the most important task, i.e. education.
The educational aspect of the project is very crucial to its success, which is not only apparent in the implementation of state-of-the-art lecturing halls by implementing technological presentation tools like video conferencing, but also in the use of technology in acquiring information required for research purposes by efficient ways like electronic encyclopedias and the internet. The current system which is based on a legacy library does not help the purpose of educational process and even lowers the standard of medical students graduating from the university.
As for the postgraduate students, the effect is much more visible. It’s well known that research is the back-bone of any post-graduate studies. The currently available system only provides such students with outdated information via some books and publications, however the target system will supply those students with a diversity of tools including internet, electronic encyclopedias, and medical records of patients already treated inside the university. This will enrich the knowledge source and will establish a knowledge database for the future.
