In 1997, Dr. Emond established the liver transplant program at Columbia, which has become one of the largest in the United States performing 158 liver transplants in 2006 (CUMC Immunology 2007). Dr. Emond also teamed up with the liver surgical team on September 24, 2004 in the first ever combined heart-liver transplant, performed at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center.
Dr. Emond has devoted himself to research concerning the ability of the liver to regenerate. He has an international reputation for living donor liver transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery, and has trained numerous liver transplant surgeons who are active throughout the world (CUMC Transplant 2007).
