An intercalated cell is a cell type in the kidney.
There are both α and β intercalated cells, of which α are studied to a higher degree. They are both in the collecting duct system of the kidney.
Alpha
α-intercalated cells have proton pumps in their apical membrane. [1]
Beta
β-intercalated cells have proton pumps in their basolateral membrane.[1]
