This image was captured during the necropsy of a rock squirrel, Spermophilus variegatus, formerly known as Citellus variegatus, which was afflicted with the pneumonic hemorrhagic plague. Note the presence of hemorrhagic blood that had been expelled from the animal’s nares, which had been the result of pulmonic hemorrhage.
